Jane Austen's classic novel of 1813, IPride and Prejudice/I, still wins the hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting.p The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be beneath him, and Elizabeth, who upon being insulted at a dance by the aloof Darcy refuses to associate with him in any manner. Austen evokes incredible tension with the wit and flirtation of the two characters, and director Simon Langton (who also directed IUpstairs Downstairs/I) successfully translates the repartee and conflict in this six-hour miniseries. Dialogue, for the most part, is painstakingly replicated, except when fleshing out and smoothing for modern sensibilities was necessary. Darcy, for instance, is drawn out, giving his personality significantly more depth. The acting sweeps you away to Regency England: Jennifer Ehle (of IWilde/I) is convincing as the obstinate Elizabeth, who, despite her mother's attempts to marry her off, spurs the attentions of Darcy. And Colin Firth (of IThe English Patient/I) will have women everywhere longing for a Mr. Darcy of their own.p For those who have been on an Austen binge--enjoying such excellent adaptations as ISense and Sensibility/I and IPersuasion/I--this miniseries will round out the ultimate Austen video library. For those new to these romantic period pieces, this version of IPride and Prejudice/I will have you hooked and longing for more. One caveat, however: plan to watch it in an entire day, because very few have the self-control to not watch all six hours in a single sitting. 5 out of 5 stars Well done Period Movie,Excellent Acting..Romance at its best   March 5, 2010

My review is for the compliled movie itself. br /Colin Firth looking very handsome as Darcy, br /portrays this role with sensitivity and a touch br /of arrogance making this one of br /his best acting roles in this br /version of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin. br / br /Darcy sees the Bennetts at a social event br /and thinks Elizabeth's(Jennifer Ehle) family would be an embarrassment br /to him and his friend Bingley in society's view br /untill he realizes after several social parties br /how much he loves her. He doesn't know what to think when br /a girl he considers beneath him doesn't jump at the chance br /to marry him..Elizabeth trys hard to despise him br /especially after he advises his friend Bingley br /not to marry her sister Jane, and is tormented by br /her real feelings. br / br /Well done Genre movie...excellent acting by all the cast, br /but Colin Firth just out does himself in this role. br /True love wins out..any more details will spoil the br /movie... br /

Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (AE, 1996); this is the best book to film since Thorn-birds. I usually don't like films made from books. This covers all the issue and is romantic. br / br /A must see for all Jane Austen book lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Great Valentine gift for my wife!! She loved it.   March 3, 2010
Joel Cassell
I bought this for my wife for Valentines Day. She absolutely loved it. It was brand new in the package and was an excellent value. I always search on Amazon when I want something that is first, hard to find, and second, usually inordinately expensive. I rarely am disappointed. I am very happy with this prchase.
