Bardock was one of the Saiya-jin Frieza used as mercenaries to conquer other worlds. Although he was only a "low level" warrior, Bardock grew so powerful that Frieza and his lieutenant Doodoria feared he might become a threat to them. Doodoria brutally murdered the other members of Bardock's squadron; Frieza destroyed the entire Saiya planet--Vegeta, Nappa, and Goku (né Kakarot) were the only survivors. Before he was killed, the fish-like, Tooro cursed Bardock with the ability to see the future, including his own brutal death. But his new psychic powers enable Bardock to establish a mysterious bond with his infant son, who will grow up to defeat the monstrous Frieza. IBardock the Father of Goku/I uses some of the same characters as the popular "Dragonball Z" TV series, but the continuities don't necessarily match. The one-hour TV special, which first aired in Japan in 1990, has been so heavily edited that it feels fragmented. The viewer is never told who Goku's mother is or why the infant is sent into space in a tiny ship, and the rock soundtrack can't quite marry the scenes that are often jarringly cut together (the uncut version supplies three extra minutes of footage that answers some of these questions). Suitable for ages 8 and up for cartoon violence, the uncut version suitable for teens. I--Charles Solomon/I

5 out of 5 stars THE DBZ Movie!!   February 5, 2003
Pikachu Ketchum (Ottawa, ONT, Canada)
This is a great video. That's all I can say! It tells the story of Bardock's life (somewhat) and explains how long the saiyans were in bondage, to a certain degree. (Vegeta is a kid, for heavan's sake!) The music gets you pumped up, and whenver you hear it on the radio it'll make you smile. DBZ fans, this is a must-have! If you're not a fan yet, this is a great place to start!!

5 out of 5 stars Bardock: The Father of Goku   January 7, 2002

This was a great DBZ story to watch, the animation is drawn kind of like the Cell saga, and is a little more emotional than the other four movies. This DBZ story is about Goku's father, a low-class Saiyan warrior who goes to planet Kanassa with Tora, Vosha, Bordos, and another guy (I don't know his name), to eliminate the Kanassans and sell the planet to Frieza. In the morning, one Kanassan is alive and strucks Bardock on the back of the head, giving him the ability to see into the future. Bardock later sees the horrifying vision of planet Vegeta being destroyed by Frieza, and tries to stop him. All in all, the music fit great with the battle scenes, it was especially cool when Bardock vanquished Dodoria's men! This was a great DBZ movie, and you should see it now. It would have been nice of FUNimation would make a TV special about Brolly or even Turles, but oh well.

4 out of 5 stars Bardock, the Father of Goku   July 9, 2001

This short movie tells the story of Goku's father, and how Goku got on Earth. Bardock and his crew are low-class fighters that take over planets for one of the strongest villains in the universe, the one and only Frieza. On one of the planets Bardock receives a power that becomes a gift, and a curse. This power allows Bardock to read minds and to see the future. Once Bardock receives this power he realizes that Frieza is coming to destroy the Saiyan home planet, Planet Vegeta only because he is afraid a Saiyan might rise and become the ultimate fighter... a Super-Saiyan. After a few visions Bardock attempts to defend his home planet even by himself. In one of his visions he sees himself fail but also sees a kid.. a kid named Kakarot, rising and becoming a great warrior. Kakarot turns out to be Goku, Bardock's son. As Bardock gets closer to his and the planet's fate.. he sees visions of his son rising and matching up with Frieza and even defeating him. After this Bardock receives his fate, and sends a few words to his son, Kakarot. This movie also shows scenes from when Goku battles with many of his foes at the very end. Only one drawback, besides the dubbing, the movie was too short! I think if they stretched it a bit, or showed more of the future (when Goku goes up against Frieza) I would have given it 5 stars. No doubt though, any Dragonball fan should buy this movie! It's an absolute HAVE for the collection!

This movie is about the history of Goku and how he was born and how he ended up on Earth. Frieza is realizing that The "Saiyan" are getting stronger and stronger after every battle and might be a pest later on so he decides to eliminate them right now. So he blows up Planet Vegeta (Where all the saiyans live) and all the Saiyans die including Bardock, Gokus father. The Only surviors are Brolly,Goku,Vegeta,Raditz,Nappa, and this one other guy that escaped with Brolly. ....
