a town like alice vhs June 14, 2010 Pamela J. Murphy The movie I loved but the VHS I recieved was in black and white which was not adertised that was very disapointing
A Town Like Alice May 26, 2010 Anne W. Meteyard (Bethlehem, PA USA) A great story based on a person interviewed by Nevil Shute. The women interviewed was Dutch and she was in Java when the Japanese took over. Shute changes the people from Dutch to British and has a group of women and children being moved from one place to another, walking all the way, through Java. The Japanese did not know what to do with these people and assigned a couple of guards to lead them to nowhere. There were many stories along the way which included Australian prisoners and natives who finally allowed them to stay in their village. The love story is believable and the two people involved are followed long after the Japanese have surrendered and they are home. A very good story based loosley on fact. Would recommend this series.
Desperately seeking this on DVD April 2, 2010 Wendy Reid (France) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I would dearly love to purchase this series on DVD - for personal reasons really as my late father acted in a scene with Bryan Brown and Gordon Jackson and I would love for my three youngest children to see him in this as he died before they were born.
br /He is the waiter serving them in the scene in the restaurant where Brown and Jackson are at dinner - it was actually filmed at a building in Macquarie Street Sydney. I am willing to pay up to A$50.00 - anyone wanting hundreds can forget it.
br /Thankyou for any help.
when a book equals in quality the TV serie March 20, 2010 BBrun (The Netherlands) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Nevil Shute's book is a great novel, not enough recognized to my personal point of view,
br /over the years adaptations from books to TV or Cinema have been struggling to pass on the emotions, the visuals of strong characters, the essence of the countries/landscapes/properties in the back ground. Gone with the wind is different from the book but stand by itself as a movie. A town like Alice (VHS only as there is no release in DVD of the TV serie) is a absolute success to pass on the emotions and the visuals from the book to TV.
br /the book is pure pleasure and the TC serie is giving you back the same reward.
br /thanks to this TV serie, we can forget the terrible cinema adaptation which could have only benefit to have a different name from the book instead to be the perfect example of adaptation's failure.
br /It would be so much deserved if this was available in DVD for a wider audience.

Historical Romance, WWII love story. Long (301 min.), I believe this was originally a mimi series, based on the book by Nevil Shute. A chance meeting between a group of British women and two Australian men, all captives of the Japanese, in Malaya, during the war. The movie follows the lives of Jean Paget who believes the kind Australian soldier was tortured to death for an act of kindness towards the women, and Joe Harman who thought the nice lady in the group of British women and children was married. Years pass with them separated by continents when Jean's life circumstances change. She returns to Malaya to build a well for the women of the poor village who showed such kindness towards the British women during the war. By chance she discovers that Joe Harmon survived. About this same time, Joe, a cattle rancher in the Outback of Australia discovers that Jean was not married. Each decides to seek out the other. Eventually they are reunited and then begin the challenge of life in the desolate Outback in an country totally foreign to Jean. Be prepared to need tissues during this emotional, enjoyable saga!
