Has its Limitations July 24, 2010 Todd7 (Michigan) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Salem's Lot (1979) is a made-for-television movie that was considered scary for the time. I would like to comment on the cinematics as well as various other modes of presentation, rather than the story. First of all, the special effects are very mediocre, despite the movie being made over thirty years ago. One can easily tell that the movie was meant for television, as limitations on overall quality of cinematics was reflected in the lower budget. Furthermore, the music was a bit of a disappointment. I expected scarier music to chill and thrill the viewer, but instead it was mainstream-sounding everyday type of music. However, some elements worked very well, such as the lighting inside the Marsten House. The overall internal atmosphere at the Marsten House brought the viewer to the edge of their seat, and was downright scary. This is offset by some poor acting at times, especially with the vampires. If one can disregard its shortcomings, Salem's Lot is still an enjoyable film, but nowhere near the best in the King series. 6/10

Salem's Lot May 30, 2010 Jane Loeffler Salem's Lot is a TV mini series from the 1980's when they were very popular. Big budgets often meant good TV. This is such a case. James Mason heads a stellar cast that exudes creepy. Quite an enjoyable few hours.
Salem's Lot Revisited May 15, 2010 Tim (Manchester, MA.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of the better interpretations of a King novel from book to film......not "The Shining" but a whole lot better than most of the screenplays written from King's works.
