Amazon.com From the moment the young Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton) is stolen from his life and ancestral home in 18th-century Africa and brought under inhumane conditions to be auctioned as a slave in America, a line is begun that leads from this most shameful chapter in U.S. history to the 20th-century author Alex Haley, a Kinte descendant. The late Haley's acclaimed book IRoots/I was adapted into this six-volume television miniseries, which was a widely watched phenomenon in 1977. The programs cover several generations in the antebellum South and end with the story of "Chicken" George, a freed slave played by Ben Vereen whose family feels the agony of entrenched racism and learns to fight it. Between the lives of Kunta and George, we meet a number of memorable characters, black and white, and learn much about the emotional and physical torments of slavery, from beatings and rapes to the forced separation of spouses and families. Nothing like this had ever confronted so many mainstream Americans when the series was originally broadcast, and the extent to which the country was nudged a degree or two toward enlightenment was instantly obvious. IRoots/I still has that ability to open one's eyes, and engage an audience in a sweeping, memorable drama at the same time. I--Tom Keogh/I

Great Story July 27, 2010 Yolanda Riley (ROSWELL, GA, US) I personally think all families should experience this movie. Inspiring and heart felt even thou it was so deep and tragic. I enjoyed it.
Factual to a great degree, but with ommitted facts of history. July 26, 2010 M. Mwamba (Baltimore, Maryland United States) This is a factual account of just some of the historical terrorism that Black people faced during and after The Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and its aftermath, Racism white-Supremacy, which has extended itself world wide. Although, the producers and writers, tried to down play its aftermath and the long term effects this terrorism has had upon those to whom this terrrorism was inflicted and perpetrated ; as well as its effects upon Black people even today (2010). There was no real mention of The Separate But Equal case of Plessy v. Fergerson and its Jim Crow Effect. Nor did they mention how this played upon Racist fears and Caucasian superiority. There was no mention of how this played itself out; in the negative portrayls of Black people in The Print Media , radio, television, Hollywood, music videos produced today, etc. and in all facets of life for Black people in the united States. It contributes to the way Caucasians see and treat (mistreat) us, even today "The only form of functional racism that exists among people of the known universe is white-Supremacy."--Neely Fuller

movie lover June 27, 2010 Box the cd was poor quality, the movie kept freezing in all the cds. it seemed like a pirate cd and not worth it at any price.
br /sorry but i do not recommend this product.
Roots May 12, 2010 Susan Hussmann (Murray, KY, USA) It was so good to watch this 1970s miniseries again. It was spellbinding the first time and just as great this time. I recommend this series to anyone. Also get the series "Roots: The Next Generation" for the continuing saga.
Good Show.. April 22, 2010 Jerry E. Tekell (Italy, Texas) As I know Amazon did not produce this movie, it is wonderful and I feel everyone should have it in their dvd collection. Jerry Tekell
