Amazon.com What sounds like a high-concept romantic comedy pitch from hell--widower president falls for smart lobbyist while the world watches--is actually intelligent, charming, touching, and quite funny. Granted, it's wish fulfillment all the way (when was the last time you saw a president who was Itruly/I presidential?), but in the capable hands of writer Aaron Sorkin (TV's ISports Night/I) and director Rob Reiner, IThe American President/I is incredibly enjoyable entertainment with quite a few ideas about both romance and the government. Michael Douglas stars as the president, who after three years in office starts thinking about the possibility of dating. When he auspiciously encounters cutthroat environmental lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), sparks begin to crackle and the two begin a tentative but heartfelt romance. Of course, his job gets in the way--their first kiss is interrupted by a Libyan bombing--but darn it if these two kids aren't going to try and make it work! However, they hadn't counted on the president's Republican antagonist (Richard Dreyfuss), who starts carping about family values. The predictable plot--Douglas finally goes to bat for his lady and his country--is leavened by Sorkin's wonderful, snappy dialogue and a light touch from the usually subtle-as-a-sledgehammer Reiner. Both manage to create a believable White House-office atmosphere (with a crack staff including Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, Anna Deavere Smith, and Samantha Mathis) as well as a plausible and funny dating scenario. The true success of the movie, though, rides squarely on Douglas and Bening; this is unequivocally Douglas's best comedic performance (ergo his best performance, period) and Bening, usually such a good bad girl, takes a standard career-woman role and fleshes it out magnificently. You can see in an instant why Douglas would fall for her. One of the best unsung romantic comedies of the '90s. I--Mark Englehart/I

GARY'S ROMANTIC REVIEWS September 8, 2010 Gary R. Toms (Camden Cty, NJ) One of my favorite movies and watch it over and over...WHY?? Because it is "real to life" as I worked in the Pentagon ("within the beltway") for 1 1/2 yrs.

Removed this item from my wishlist August 5, 2010 Ganesh P. Bhat (New York, NY USA) Removed this item from my wishlist as it was a FullScreen format (1.33:1 confused me a bit)
Romance at it's best! July 18, 2010 R.Lawrence (Kent) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you've seen 'Love Affair' with Annette Bening and Warren Beaty and you liked it, then you'll like this movie. It's the same line in a way. A famous ball player, or an American President. The latter played by Michael Douglas. It's like the 'slipper and the Rose' The handsome prince and the beautiful priness. But it didn't start with either of these two movies of course. It didn't start with the one I most remember either. That was 'South Pacific' with Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi? They're all beautiful movies. You'll watch them more than once, oh what am I saying...you already have!
Nice story, almost ruined by political bias May 8, 2010 Mark Wilsonwood (Grapevine, TX) 1 out of 11 found this review helpful
Did I say "political bias"? More like EXTREME political bias. When they made a movie like this in the old days, the president's party was never explicitly identified, and shots at the opposition party were generic; so you could imagine the hero was Republican or Democrat, according to your own preference. This was smart of the filmmakers, because they could avoid offending half the movie-going audience. Today, however, Hollywood WANTS to offend half its audience -- particularly the conservative half. So we get movies like this one, which has a modestly charming love story all but ruined by Martin Sheen and Michael J. Fox taking turns declaring how evil and stupid Republicans are.
