Amazon.com This lightweight World War II comedy is an amiable wade through the South Pacific buoyed largely by Cary Grant's effortless leadership as the commander of a crippled submarine and by Tony Curtis's blue-eyed wiles as his street-hustler of a supply officer. The crew dodges the enemy in a barely seaworthy vessel held together with chewing gum and baling wire (and, in one instance, a woman's girdle!) and painted a blushing bright pink. The close quarters get even tighter when the sub takes on five young army nurses, a couple of Filipino families, and a goat. Though it has little of the zany knockabout humor that marks later Blake Edwards hits like IThe Pink Panther/I and I10/I and it almost wears out its premise at two hours, this easy-sailing comedy rolls along the gentle wakes from one fine mess to another with good humor and a bevy of coy close-quarters sex gags. My mother-in-law was thrilled July 16, 2010 Samara Dawson This is not a title we've seen available in any store so my mother-in-law was surprised and very happy to have received this as part of her birthday gift.
Funny and very quotable June 14, 2010 Nancy Docken (Minneapolis, MN, USA) I'm old enough that I first saw this movie in the theater shortly after it was first released. Over the years, I've been back numerous times to lift my spirits and to get a refresher course on great movie quotes.

br /Cary Grant plays the submarine captain who just wants his ship to get off the seabed and into the war. Tony Curtis is Lt. Holden, the bane of his existence AND the only person who can help him get what he needs to do the job. Arthur Kennedy is the crusty machinist's mate, Tofton, who is trying to hold a submarine together with bailing wire and anything else Lt. Holden can get his hands on. When the Captain asks whether he thinks they can survive a sea voyage, Tofton responds "I'm a religious man, Captain. I believe we can get through if the good Lord puts his mind to it...of course, He'll have to give us His undivided attention."

br /We may not be talking about award winning performances, but we always finish this movie laughing and feeling better about the world.
"We all live in a pink submarine . . ." May 31, 2010 J. H. Minde (Boca Raton, Florida and Brooklyn, New York) Blake Edwards, who gave us The Pink Panther gives us, in OPERATION PETTICOAT, a pink submarine.

br /The "USS Sea Tiger" commanded by Cary Grant, is sunk at its Manila mooring on December 7, 1941. With sheer willpower, sweat, and the aid of the best scrounger in the Pacific Theater (Tony Curtis), the crew of the "Sea Tiger" is able to raise her and get her under weigh, albeit on one engine that gurgles like a clogged drain.
br /
br /Making repairs even as she sails for Pearl Harbor, the "Sea Tiger" puts in for supplies at Cebu. In need of antifouling paint, Curtis wheels and deals a short supply of red and a short supply of white. The result is a lovely shade of pink. Fortunately, there's a plentiful supply of battleship gray topcoat; unfortunately, the Japanese are so close that the crew never gets a chance to apply it.
br /
br /The "Sea Tiger" also acquires passengers in Cebu, a bevy of stranded American nurses, who quickly turn the spartan submarine domestic. The crew works among washed-and-drying ladies unmentionables, and has plenty of close contact in the narrow passageways, leading to some riotously funny sexual tension.
br /
br /Grant tries hard to be the stern Captain, but even he can't occasionally restrain a silly grin as the "Sea Tiger" sails on. The odd vessel is spotted by the Japanese. They scratch their heads. The Americans, jumpy after being attacked, are less tolerant. They attack the "Sea Tiger," which, submerged and depth-charged, saves itself by sending up a very unusual signal flag.
br /
br /Made only fourteen years after the war's end, OPERATION PETTICOAT is just far enough removed from the war years to find its own humor, but yet not so far removed that it forgets the seriousness and sacrifice of war.

br /VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Operation Petticoat May 28, 2010 Danny L. John (Iowa City, IA USA) Very fast shipping. I love the video. However I was expecting it to be in its original container, so that was dissappointing. But the DVD itself is in good condition.
Awesome movie April 13, 2010 HappyinNorthCarolina (Charlotte, NC) Cary Grant and Tony Curtis together in the same movie. Tony Curtis steals this movie and is at his absolute best.
